Art from the Heart

Just be yourself!
Sharon Teal Coray

So many times in my art academy I would see students who wanted to paint “just like me”. I did not want to produce a bunch of clones so I would show them how I did things but tell them that they could use their own choice of brush's or do it the way they wanted to express themselves.
I focused on the basics of color theory, composition and the general rules for painting a great piece of art in my classes and as a result I had hundreds of students who all painted their own style.
I had very tight painters and very loose painters and each one was an individual. They all painted the things they loved and it showed. In art school you learn to express yourself, what you feel and eventually you develop a style and a palette that is yours exclusively.
In classes where everyone is painting the same thing you never develop your own art style and you never learn how to mix colors or how composition works.

There are some who never develop a style because they are always painting from others work. If they are happy with that then so be it but if you want to improve your art you need to step out of that box and start learning all the basic teachings that have been taught for eons.
I've seen instructors get very upset with students who try to "do their own thing" in a workshop.
Taking a workshop is quite different from taking a real art class. In a workshop you are there to learn specific techniques that the teacher uses. It is not a good idea to do your own thing in a workshop, your there to learn some new tricks with brushes and paint. You might learn even something new about design and color, too. When you return to your studio you can put some of those things to use or maybe not! It is your choice!

Being yourself is so important, never let anyone tell you that you need to change your style. Your painting style is yours and yours alone.
Once you have established your own technique enjoy using it and never worry about what others are doing or what they may think!

Just be yourself be original after all this is a blessing that God gave you!

"Don't worry about your originality. You could not get rid of it even if you wanted to. It will stick to you and show you up for better or worse in spite of all you or anyone else can do"
From "The Art Spirit" by Robert Henri

Today you are You, that is truer than true. There is no one alive who is Youer than You. Dr. Seuss
