How to Hold your Brush

Hold your brush where it feels naturally balanced but not  too near the ferrule. This limits movement to the fingers and encourages brush marks that will be monotonous and restrictive. Put an elastic band around the brush, it will serve as a reminder each time your hand slips down toward the bristles.

Remember that the brush is an extension of yourself. Don't restrict your arm movements and gestures if you are painting on a large canvas. Don't get too close to your work that you stab at it. The movement of the arm from the shoulder through the elbow and wrist should be fluid confidant and controlled. Experiment to find out what each brush will do.
