Product Review Fredrix Canvas Products

I have had students ask me often how to choose a canvas. I have a favorite brand and that is Fredrix Canvas by Tara. Since 1868 they have been making unparalleled quality and they offer the biggest selection of artists canvas available anywhere.

So here is some info about the canvas I love.

For still-life, landscapes and seascapes I would recommend Fredrix Red Label Canvas. This canvas features finer quality medium textured, duck canvas. It is double-primed with acid-free acrylic gesso. It can be used with acrylics or oils. The canvas is stapled onto the back of the stretcher bars so I can paint all the sides and hang it without framing it.

For portraits, floral’s and fine detail I would say to pay the extra charge and go for the Fredrix Blue Label, it is made of superior quality, with medium weight blended PolyFlax/cotton duck. It has a very fine texture and I use it with both acrylics and oils. It is triple primed with acid free acrylic gesso. It is also stapled on the back allowing me to paint the edges and not have to frame it.

For the artist who can afford pure Belgium linen Fredrix Green label is for them. It is a fine, pure medium weight canvas, with a pronounced texture and acrylic titanium double-primed with acid-free smooth ground for use with oils or acrylics. The canvas is stapled onto the back of standard stretcher bars. Paint on all four edges and hang it with or without a frame.

One of me favorites is the Pro Series, it is more expensive but it is developed for the professional artist who is in galleries. It is their finest cotton duck and features the famous Dixie canvas. It is stretched on kiln dried stretcher bars in standard and gallery wrap and deep styles. It is good for oils, acrylics and alkyds.

Gallerywrap Canvas is a medium-textured canvas made of cotton duck with superior quality. It is double primed and acid free. The canvas is mounted on 1-3/8" heavy-duty stretcher frames for double the standard thickness. The canvas is stapled on the back to allow painting on all sides. It can hang with or without a frame.

Fredrix Creative Edge Canvas is double primed with acid free acrylic gesso. This staple-free edge stretched canvas is made with 100% cotton duck canvas with tongue and groove adjustable standard stretcher bars. A vinyl spline holds the canvas snugly in place. Paint on all four sides so it can be hung without a picture frame.

Float™ Canvas is an innovative stretched canvas product exclusive to Fredrix®. Float™ Canvas features a unique design with steeply angled stretcher bars that enhances your art with a dramatic floating effect when hung on the wall.
