If you are just beginning to paint you may want to start with a monochromatic color scheme. These are the easiest for beginners to work with because you only use different values (tints and shades) of one single color.
This is also a great way to learn about values and train your eye to see the subtle changes in values of one color.
Of course your painting will not be as stirring as one that a full color palette is used but it does serve it's purpose.

Monochromatic color schemes may lack diversity but they can be used to create a very calming and soothing painting.
It is a fun exercise to choose one color and paint a whole painting with that color plus white and black.
